Invisalign

Invisalign in Singapore

Invisalign® takes a modern approach to straightening teeth and orthodontic treatment by using a custom-made series of aligners created for you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements your dentist plans out for you. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You simply pop a new set of aligners in approximately once every two weeks, until your treatment is complete. You’ll achieve a great smile with little interference in your daily life. The best part about the whole process is that most people won't even know you're straightening your teeth.

What are the types of conditions that Invisalign can treat?

Underbite

An underbite is where the teeth on the lower jaw protrude in front of the teeth on the upper jaw. It may cause difficulty biting and chewing or hinder speech.

Overbite

An overbite is where the teeth on the upper jaw excessively protrudes over the teeth on the lower jaw. In this case, the lower teeth may cause damage to the upper gums.

Gap teeth

This happens when there is extra space between the teeth. Not only does it not look good, it also causes food to be more easily trapped between your teeth when you eat, resulting in tooth decay and gum problems.

Crossbite

A crossbite happens when some of the upper teeth are behind the lower teeth when the mouth is closed, rather than over the lower teeth in normal circumstances. This may wear out the teeth over time and could even cause chipping.

Open bite

An open bite happens when the upper and lower teeth are unable to touch or close up when your mouth is closed. Open bites affect how you look and can cause difficulties in speech.

Crowded teeth

Crowded teeth happen when there is insufficient space in the jaw for all of your teeth to fit. Crowding can mean that teeth become bunched together, overlapping and twisting, pushing teeth to the front or the back of the mouth.

What is the process of getting Invisalign in Singapore?

First, your dentist will take a 3D scan of your teeth, x-rays and a set of photos. This information will then be used to create a series of custom made Invisalign aligners. These aligners fit snugly over your teeth and exerts gentle pressure to move your teeth by a small amount each time. Most of the time, tooth-coloured attachments will be placed on your teeth to provide an additional surface for the aligners to push on, therefore having a greater degree of control over teeth movement. The aligners are changed once every 1-2 weeks, or as prescribed by your dentist.

Initial consultation

During the initial consultation, the dentist will take a few things such as:

  • X-rays of your teeth and jaws
  • Photos of your face and smile
  • A digital scan or an analogue impression of your teeth

These are necessary for the Invisalign technical team to process and create a Clincheck treatment plan. Clincheck software is used to map out the 3D prediction of how your teeth will look during and after the Invisalign treatment. It shows every movement your teeth go through. The Clincheck treatment plan is hence customised specially for you and will help us dentists plan the treatment for you.

Clincheck approval

We will review and amend the proposed Clincheck plan and there will be a follow-up to discuss it. Changes can still be made to the treatment plan based on your needs and desires. Do ask the dentists any concerns or questions you may have before fabrication of the aligners.

Aligner fabrication

When the Clincheck treatment plan is confirmed, the Invisalign clear aligners will be fabricated and shipped over to our Singapore clinics. This usually takes roughly 2 weeks after confirmation.

Aligner fitting and attachments

During the next visit, your dentist will provide you with dental attachments to be placed on your teeth. These are small, tooth-coloured studs that will be glued to the teeth to guide the direction of the force.

Then, you will be provided with a series of aligners along with usage and care instructions. You will be given 2 - 3 sets of Invisalign aligners to wear until the next appointment roughly 6 weeks later. Each set of aligners will be worn for 1 - 2 weeks before moving on to the next set.

Some clinics also offer Dental Monitoring, an A.I. tracking system that will help to monitor your Invisalign treatment through weekly photographs. The A.I. detection system will alert the dentist about any potential issues along the way.

The Invisalign journey

The Invisalign clear aligners have to be worn about 20 - 22 hours a day, only removing them when you’re brushing, flossing or eating. The teeth will slowly shift into desired positions.

Your dentist will review the progress of your Invisalign treatment every 6 - 8 weeks and address any issues there may be.

The entire Invisalign journey may take up to a year or two depending on the complexity of the case.

Finishing touches

After you’re done with the aligners, you will need to wear retainers to hold your teeth in place. This prevents a relapse and allows the teeth roots to fuse to the jawbone so as to permanently lock them in place. Retainers should be worn every day for about a year.

Who can get Invisalign?

Invisalign can be used to treat patients of any age. However, because the mechanics of Invisalign aligners differ from braces, it may not be as efficient in treating severe orthodontic problems.

The main contraindication for Invisalign is poor compliance. Because it is a removable appliance, its effectiveness depends heavily on how diligent the patient is with wearing the aligners for the required number of hours per day.

What are the types of Invisalign Plans available in Singapore?

Express

This is for very minor cases or for relapse cases in patients who have already received orthodontic treatment before. There are only 7 sets of aligners for this plan.

Lite

This plan only offers up to 14 sets of Invisalign aligners for mild cases, suitable for those who do not need extractions.

Moderate

This is for cases that have “moderate” complexity, recommended if your dentist believes that up to 26 sets of aligners are all that’s needed to achieve the smile you want.

Full comprehensive

This is the “full” and “comprehensive” Invisalign treatment meant for patients who need a significant amount of teeth movement because they have more complicated orthodontic problems.

This plan will provide an unlimited number of aligners, meaning as many as necessary to achieve the desired result.
